As Heavy Duty Truck / Trailer Mechanic you will join our rapidly growing Mechanical Services Division and work in and out of our Columbia, SC shop. You will add your talents to an experienced team and be responsible for repairing and maintaining both diesel and gasoline powered Class 5 through 8 heavy trucks. You will diagnose and repair system components, perform inspections and preventative maintenance, install new trailer parts and more. You will work on all types of trucks and trailers, sometimes working in the shop, and other times taking a repair truck out in the field or to a customer's location to perform mobile repairs. This is a role where you will have ample opportunities to increase your professional skills, both on the job and through OEM and other training. In fact, in time you could advance through 4 Mechanic levels, then move to a Lead role and beyond, increasing your income as you go.

We have multiple openings for level 2 to 4 mechanics at various locations across South Carolina and Georgia, so feel free to share this information with your network of skilled peers. While our preference is to find mechanics with well-rounded experience, we will also consider mechanics who have strengths leaning more toward truck or trailer repair. The Requirements

While Snider Fleet Solutions has four levels of mechanics prior to Lead, we are actively seeking skilled mechanics who are level two and higher. To meet the level two requirements for the Heavy Duty Truck / Trailer Mechanic opportunity, you will have:

  • Significant professional training and/or relevant hands-on experience  Quick question for you - click here
  • Basic electrical knowledge and the ability to diagnose electrical issues and properly repair according to industry standards; the skill to read wiring diagrams
  • Skill and ability to operate a mobile repair truck in the field and effectively diagnose, problem solve, and repair vehicles in emergency situations*
  • Demonstrated ability to perform proper testing of voltage draw and measure alternator output
  • Ability to:
    • Read and understand wiring diagrams, basic electrical principals, and technical manuals
    • Perform periodic maintenance on SCR, DOC, DPF, and DEF systems as required by engine manufacturers
    • Perform gas, MIG, TIG, and electric arc (Stick) welding, plasma cutting; basic fabrication skills 
    • Diagnose and repair truck HVAC and/or APU’s
    • Meet or exceed SFS productivity standards by adhering to published SRT times
  • Computer skills including:
    • Word processing software, such as Microsoft Word
    • Maintenance & diagnostic software/database order processing systems, ideally JPRO
    • The skill to read and interpret data containing DTC’s (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

On the Job

As Heavy Duty Truck / Trailer Mechanic you will work in our Columbia shop, which includes a team of approximately 7 mechanics, 4 mobile trucks and 6 bays. You will be responsible for repairing and maintaining both diesel and gasoline powered Class 5 through 8 heavy trucks. We service customer fleets and a small number of Snider vehicles, so you will work on a wide variety of models and equipment. You could repair and maintain trucks, trailers and equipment including dry van, flatbed, dry bulk tanker, liquid tanker, reefer, pole, spool, canvas side, auto carrier, specialty trailers, trailing equipment, and converter gear. We have approximately a 50/50 split between shop-based vs. mobile work in Columbia, so you should be prepared to work both in shop and out in the field. We try to assign specific accounts to each mechanic, but at times workflow demands that multiple mechanics are working on the same account, so you should be flexible and adaptable in your assignments and in performing your duties. 

In performing your duties, you will:
  • Read job orders and observe, listen to, and in some cases road test heavy duty trucks in operational mode to determine malfunctions or issues and plan the proper work procedures
  • Diagnose all heavy duty truck system components including electrical, electronics, and emissions related fault codes etc., in order to repair or replace faulty parts, as indicated by required testing or visual observations
  • Perform valve and injector overhead adjustments according to OEM procedures
  • During periodic maintenance inspections, examine all truck componentry, insuring that vehicle is in satisfactory compliance with Federal annual inspection and brake system criteria guidelines and all safety devices, such as fire extinguishers, reflective triangles, conspicuity markings, ABS systems, collision avoidance, frontal radar, and lane departure warning devices, are fully functional
  • Lubricate moving parts such as drive line components, hinged parts, suspension, and steering system components
  • Read job orders and evaluate trailer / equipment condition for any symptomatic issues in order to determine a malfunction or need for further diagnostics, in order to properly plan the corrective work procedures
  • Install new parts such as, but not limited to: cross members, panels, posts, rails, door equipment, flooring, lights, wiring, brakes, valves, airlines, wheel end components, landing gear, frame assembly, and other parts
  • Examine all system parts looking for damage, excessive wear, loose bolts, broken welds, structural deficiencies, air leaks, oils leaks, stuck, frozen, or rusted parts, as well as safety devices on all types of trailers
  • Lubricate moving parts and perform air system and lighting system tests to include ABS system function, while insuring the trailer meets OEM, Federal annual inspection, and brake system criteria guidelines and industry conformance to specifications
  • Fabricate various attachments, supports, reinforcement, gussets, etc. according to general designs, blueprints or schematic drawings

Set for success
We'll set you up for success with strong onboarding and the tools and resources needed to thrive and excel. Upon joining us, you will work shoulder to shoulder with a seasoned mechanic, ride along in a truck and help with mobile assignments. Depending upon your skills and experience you will undergo 30 to 60 days of onboarding. Of course you’ll get hands-on right away, but will have an expert nearby to help guide you.

For example, if you’re ready to move up to a Mechanic III role you will need to be tested and approved, but can request testing outside of your review period.
